Calibrating automotive electronics

Finding the optimized set of ECU-parameters for top vehicle performance

Calibration of automotive electronics is an essential part of the development process of new vehicles from the first prototypes until after SOP.

ECU software is parameterized so that the behaviour of control and diagnostic functions can be easily adapted to a variety of system variants or vehicle models. This happens by calibrating or modifying the characteristic values of function algorithms, without the need to change calculation routines.

Key challenges

High complexity

Ten thousands of calibration parameters and numerous interactions between different software functions must be considered.

Meeting (legal) specifications

Tight and often contradictory requirements such as NOx versus CO2 reduction.

Extensive variant management

Calibrations of electronic systems must be carried out for a number of different vehicles or model variants which are sold in different markets.

ETAS’s portfolio covers typical engine calibration tasks, including:

  • Optimizing base engine parameters like injection, ignition, and valve timing for power, torque, fuel consumption, and emissions under various conditions.
  • Parameterizing algorithms to calculate key engine values such as torque, air and fuel mass, and emissions.
  • Optimizing drivability from idle control to balancing sportiness and comfort.
  • Parameterizing safety-related functions like vehicle dynamics control.
  • Refining and validating calibrations under realistic environmental conditions during test trips.
